Rising Waves

With the Syrène Saxophone Quartet, Merel searches for a musical response to rising sea levels

The Syrènes feel most at home in and around water. They have previously immersed themselves—quite literally—in Water Music by Handel and in the soundscapes of Underwater by Celia Swart. Now, together with violinist Merel Vercammen, they find themselves not in their familiar wild waters, but on thin ice, creating a programme about rising sea levels. Whereas in Underwater (Celia Swart) the water slowly begins to rise, in The Waves by JacobTV it has reached the lips. In The Lark Ascending by Ralph Vaughan Williams, the lark rises—soaring above the water.
