Ode to Gubaidulina

A musical tribute on violin and cello

Violinist Merel Vercammen and cellist Maya Fridman present a musical tribute to the renowned composer Sofia Gubaidulina (1931-2025) and her Astreja ensemble, which specialized in improvisation. Before the intermission, a selection of Bach’s two-part inventions serves as the starting point for improvisations, followed by the French impressionist colours of Ravel’s Duo for violin and cello (movements I and II).

After the interval, Merel and Maya* pay homage to the Astreja ensemble with improvisations that echo its spirit, before concluding with Gubaidulina’s powerful work Rejoice for violin and cello.
